User-Defined Database

Application Overview

This powerful application affords the user the ability to establish and maintain several additional fields within key Computer Guidance master files. Each master file has the ability to contain up to 35 user-designed fields, however, only the fields you use are active and displayed. Our Equipment Master and H/R Personnel Master files provide the field capabilities to 35 user-designed fields with up to 999 user categories.

User-Defined Master Files

Newly defined fields are populated only as needed so as not to use any additional disk space. For example, if you specify an additional 10 fields to the employee master and these 10 fields total 100 characters, and you have 1000 employees but only use these new fields for 10 of your employees, then the amount of disk used is 1000 characters (10 employees x 100 characters) not 100,000 characters.

These additional fields will be individually selectable as to which ones you want to display, their positions on the screen, and also the column headings for those fields.

The selection of additional fields will include:

  • 5 one (1) byte character fields
  • 5 ten (10) byte character fields
  • 5 twenty-five (25) byte character fields
  • 5 fifty (50) byte character fields
  • 5 six (6) byte numeric fields with user defined decimal positioning or date editing/formatting
  • 10 fifteen (15) byte numeric fields with user defined decimal positioning

All user defined fields will be automatically included anytime you do file maintenance on the related master file; they will be included on the standard master file inquiries, and the file listing.

To illustrate the use of this powerful new application, let us assume we have a need for two additional minority codes and user comments for the vendor master file. You would first go into the default values and tell the system that you need to add additional fields to the vendor master and which format and heading you want. From that point on, whenever you go into the vendor master file maintenance, the system will allow you to enter data into your user defined fields.
